Research Facilities in the Main Library

Tony Skyrme Researcher Suite

Exclusively for the use of research students and staff, this space is located on the first floor of the main Library and overlooks University Square. It consists of two rooms with a range of seating types, lockers and PCs and is accessible by swipe card access.  Refreshment facilities are available.

Research Reserve

Our heritage research collections are held in the Research Reserve. Items can be requested via FindIt@Bham, using the online form. Items are fetched at frequent intervals during the day. Certain items (e.g. fragile or rare items) and microforms can only be consulted in the Allport Room study space in the Research Reserve.‚Äč

Research Skills Appointments

In addition to a range of workshops, the Research Skills Advisors can offer 1:1 appointments on: advanced literature searching (advising on but not undertaking literature/systematic reviews); Reference management and Endnote; Research metrics; ORCiD; and introductory advice in Open Access, Research Data Management and copyright.

1:1 appointments may be conducted in person, via email, over the phone, or online via Skype.

Your Research Skills Team

The Research Skills Team provides workshops, online resources and 1:1 appointments to support postgraduate research students, academic staff, research staff and research support staff to become more effective researchers.

University Graduate School

The University Graduate School can also offer Postgraduate Research Students a range of support, events and development opportunities.


EndNote is a commercial reference management software package, used to manage bibliographies and references when writing dissertations and articles.

  • Consult the Clarivate Analytics EndNote LibGuide for support materials, including user guides.
  • Use the web-based version of EndNote with limited functionality (registration required - free to University of Birmingham staff and students), but which may be useful if you wish to access your EndNote Library from a number of different computers.
  • Attend a course, run regularly by Library Services.

Digital and Technology Skills Team

The Digital and Technology Skills Team design and deliver a wide range of courses and technology training solutions to meet the developmental needs of students, teaching, research and admin staff.

We specialise in software such as Databases, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Digital Images, Project Management, Word Processing and Statistics.
