Getting Started with RefWorks

RefWorks is a web-based referencing tool to help make referencing easy. It has two big advantages. Firstly, it allows you to gather, manage and store your references and secondly it interacts with Word allowing you to easily create citations and reference lists in the style (such as Harvard Cite them Right) that you require. 

  • Use the Find Databases link (within FindIt@Bham) to locate RefWorks - New.  Click on the title to enter RefWorks - New.
  • If you haven’t used RefWorks - New before you will be asked to register:
    • Click ‘Create account’
    • Enter your University e-mail address and select ‘Check’
    • Click on ‘Use login from my institution’
    • Select ‘University of Birmingham’ from the drop-down menu
    • Log-in using your usual UoB log-in details
    • Enter your first name, last name, department and position (student)
  • Once in RefWorks click on ‘My folders’ > ‘+ Add a Folder’ from the left-hand menu. Name your folder (for example UG_ResearchProject_Sept18) and click Create. You should see your folder appear in the ‘My Folders’ list.

Using RefWorks

  • Open another web browser (leaving RefWorks open). Log in to FindIt@Bham again and go to Find Databases > Web of Science (Core Collection). Search for combustion AND "fossil power" (selecting Topic as the place you want these terms to be found). Narrow your results to ‘Article’ and limit your results to a date range between 2008 and 2017.
  • From the list of results that match your search criteria, select an article which you would like to import to RefWorks. This can be done by clicking on the article title hyperlink.
  • You should now be inside the screen which tells you more about the article you have selected: e.g. journal title, authors, publication date, abstract etc (this information is known as bibliographic information). Click on the Save to EndNote Online drop-down towards the top of the screen and select Save to RefWorks.

 

  • You will be presented with a choice of how much information you wish to export
  • Select Full Record and Cited References
  • Click on the Send button
  • You will be presented with a choice of where to export to: 

 

  • Select 'ProQuest RefWorks - Export to New RefWorks'
  • You will receive confirmation that your references have been imported. Click the OK button
  • Select the article(s) you have added to RefWorks by using the check box(es) to the left of the author(s). Drag and drop the references to the folder (from the left-hand menu) that you have created (e.g. UG_ResearchProject_Sept18). To see what information about the article(s) has been transferred into RefWorks click once on any reference and information will appear in a left-hand column.
  • Suppose we wish to add the following book, available from Library Services, to RefWorks: Harnby, N. Edwards, M.F., Nienow, A.W. (eds) (1997) Mixing in the Process Industries. 2nd edn. Oxford:Butterworth-Heinemann.
  • Find the item on FindIt@Bham
  • From the results page click the three dots  to the right of the entry you wish to send to RefWorks 
  • From the screen that appears click on the Refworks icon

  • You will be presented with a choice of where to export to: 

 

  • Select 'ProQuest RefWorks - Export to New RefWorks'
  • You will receive confirmation that your references have been imported. Click the OK button
  • Select the article(s) you have added to RefWorks by using the check box(es) to the left of the author(s). Drag and drop the references to the folder (from the left-hand menu) that you have created (e.g. UG_ResearchProject_Sept18). To see what information about the article(s) has been transferred into RefWorks click once on any reference and information will appear in a left-hand column.

 

  • Now open up a Word document and type some text (for example: “Online retailing is a topic of much interest”). At the end of the sentence leave a space and proceed to the next step.
  • Select the RefWorks tab from the ribbon across the top of the screen. Click on . You will be asked to log-in: select ‘Log-in from my institution’. Select University of Birmingham and log-in using your account details. 

  • You will then be asked to select the version of RefWorks that you wish to use. Select ‘Login with the New RefWorks’
  • Once you have logged on, click ‘Insert Citation’ > ‘Insert New’. Select the folder you require (e.g. UG_ResearchProject_Sept18) and then the reference. Click OK. You will see your imported citation (don’t worry that it probably isn’t formatted correctly yet!). Now return a couple of times and insert the heading ‘References’ into your document. Click ‘Bibliography Options’ > ‘Insert Bibliography’ to insert the full reference.
  • To format in Harvard (Cite them Right) style, select ‘Style’ > ‘Select Other Style’ > Cite them Right Harvard. Select Save. You should now see your citation and reference list formatted in Harvard (Cite them Right) style.
