Reflective Writing: A short guide

A Short Guide to Reflective Writing

Introduction

What is reflection and why is it important?

Reflection is a purposeful activity in which you analyse experiences, or your own practice/skills/responses, in order to think, to learn and possibly to change your practice. We reflect quite naturally in our day to day lives, thinking about things that have happened, why they have happened, whether we handled them well.

In your academic work you are sometimes asked to formalise your reflections within your essays, dissertations or learning journals.
