David Bedford of the Information Literacy Group in the UK has written an excellent blog post summarising key sources, where to start and what to trust, as part of a list produced for the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.
The majority of sources in this guide are on open access (no subscription required). Subscription resources are clearly marked, and do require a University of Birmingham or other institutional login.
