Covid-19 Guide

This is a general guide with specific links to recognizable sources of information on Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Important note: the sites included have been carefully chosen.  However, we are not responsible for the content of external websites.

David Bedford of the Information Literacy Group in the UK has written an excellent blog post summarising key sources, where to start and what to trust, as part of a list produced for the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

The majority of sources in this guide are on open access (no subscription required).  Subscription resources are clearly marked, and do require a University of Birmingham or other institutional login.

From the University of Birmingham:

The Health on the Net group has produced 8 principles for certifying reliable health information online.

UNESCO has a clear warning about misinformation; and the World Health Organisation has produced a myth buster guide for the public.

The International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) has produced a poster on ' How to spot fake news'.

How to spot fake news: consider the source; read beyond the headlines; check the author for authenticity; what are the supporting sources; check the date; is it a joke? ; check your own biases; ask the experts such as a librarian or fact-checking service
