The Oxford Handbook of Papyrology provides an introduction to the world of ancient documents and literary texts, ranging from the raw materials of writing to the languages used, from the history of papyrology to its future, and from practical help in reading papyri to frank opinions about the nature of the work of papyrologists.

Professor Turner considers papyrus as a writing material, goes on to the problems of excavating for papyri, editing a papyrus text, determining its author and owners, and so on. He discusses the relation of papyri to Greek literature as well as to various types of non-literary documents, and he assesses various contributions papyri have made to ancient history. A list of the principal editions of papyri is included.

The "New Papyrological Primer" is a fully revised and expanded edition of David and Groningen's 1964 standard introduction to Greek papyrological texts. The current edition contains 81 Greek texts, arranged in a chronological order, which illustrate various aspects of life in Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt. Each text is provided with a short commentary and explanatory notes, which aim to allow students to understand the text and to place it accurately in its social context.
