If your course involves participating in online seminars, our advice in preparation, participation and reflection afterwards are all still just as important and applicable.
- Just as you would with an in-person seminar, in advance prepare any activities, readings or notes and anticipate any discussions or questions. Also test out and ensure you are familiar with the technology that will be used.
- During the seminar itself, it will be useful to have either a physical or online notepad available, to help you take notes throughout the discussion.
- It can be harder to read body language on a screen so make sure you are paying attention to the social cues offered by the tutor. It's likely that they will have 'rules' for engaging, such as muted microphones, perhaps using the 'raise hand' function or asking students to contribute in the chat. It can also be helpful to make your body language a little more pronounced through smiling and nodding.
- Try and find a quiet spot for the seminar so that you won't be distracted or interrupted, and close any apps or windows on your computer so that you are fully engage with the session.
- Finally, don't forget to reflect afterwards on what you took away from the seminar, including any thoughts on how you might approach it next time.
