Cite Them Right Online (CTRO)

Cite Them Right Online (CTRO) is a publisher resource available to members of University of Birmingham and other institutions with a subscription.  It was developed from the long-running book, Cite Them Right, currently in its 12th edition, by Pears and Shields (2022), a respected manual and guide to matters of referencing in academic work.

CTRO can be accessed via FindIt@Bham or by going direct to the CTRO site.

  • Cite Them Right Online - login as "University of Birmingham" (University of Birmingham students and staff only)
  • FindIt@Bham entry - University ID login (University of Birmingham students and staff only)

The book 'Cite Them Right' is also available via FindIt@Bham.

  • Cite Them Right - ebook entry. Full access to University of Birmingham students and staff with university logins.

CTRO covers how and why to reference, and give clear, worked examples in different referencing styles covering different formats such as Books, Journals, Digital and Internet and more. Each example is introduced by a list of required elements (such as author, title) and order of entry.

  • The search bar in CTRO can be used to find specific entries - such as Figures, Tables.
  • Select 'Choose Referencing Style' at the top and select the style you have been directed to use by your tutors or Programme.  Then look for the relevant format, such as Journals, to see examples with full details of in-text citation and reference list entries.
  • Select 'Browse Categories' to go to Books, Journals (etc) first, then choose the required Style.
