Sample Searches

1. Quick  Search      

You would like to find the number of occurrences of the term "serpent" in ProQuest One Literature.

Enter serpent in the Basic Search box found on the homepage.

Click Search.

 

 2. Author Search

You would like to locate information about the author Geoffrey Chaucer, including links to available texts, criticism and reference material.

On the Basic Search box, select Author Pages.

Enter Geoffrey Chaucer and then click Search.

Click on the link to the Author Page for Geoffrey Chaucer, and you will see a biography and links to most viewed primary texts, recent criticism, relevant reference works and related videos. There is a link to View All references in each category.

 

 3. Primary Text Search

You are searching for texts related to war and death that were published between WW1 and WW2.

Select Advanced Search, then Primary texts.

Enter war AND death in the search box. Select Anywhere in the drop down menu.

For Publication Date, select Specific date Range. Enter 1914 as start year, enter 1945 as end year.

Click Update.

4. Variant Spellings

You are looking for occurrences of the word "jealousy" including old spellings.

Select Advanced Search.

Enter Jealousy in the search box. Select Anywhere in the drop down menu.

Click Result Page Options on the bottom part of the advanced search page, select Show additional terms included in the search.

Click Search.

On top of the result list of will see a list of the variant spellings and variant forms of jealousy that was included in your search.

5. Criticism

You are looking for texts about the author Jack Kerouac.

Select Advanced Search, then Criticism.

On the drop down menu, select All Subjects & Indexing. Enter Jack Kerouac.

Click Search.

6. Reference

You are searching for Reference material on the works of Samuel Beckett.

Select the Reference Works tab and enter "Samuel Beckett" in the search box.

Click Search. The results list will display all relevant materials and web sites including Knowledge Notes, Biography, and Bibliography.

 

7. Full Text Journals

You would like to browse full text scholarly journals.

Select the Publications tab.

Select Source Type: Scholarly Journals in the menu.

Search for e.g.: "African Studies Review". Then browse or search for an issue or article.

8. Browse

You are interested in learning more about authors in the Harlem Renaissance movement.

Under the Browse tab, click on the Movement option.

Browse down to Harlem Renaissance, ca 1920-1939. Click the View Authors button.

Select one of the authors, for example Hughes, Langston, 1902-1967, to see all information on the Author page.
