Zotero and Word

The download of Zotero should automatically install Zotero within Word, in a connection similar to those used in EndNote.

A tab for Zotero appears at the top of the Word screen: within this are options for in-text citations and bibliographies.

The Document preferences function is to change referencing styles as required.

Style Note:

"University of Birmingham Harvard".  If you see this style listed, do not use it as it is obsolete and no longer in use.  "Cite Them Right Harvard" is a common current style, as recommended in the book and online resource of that name.

 

Add or edit citations part 1

Add / edit citation from Zotero in Word.

1. Choose the citation style and then 'OK' at the bottom

2. A red search bar should appear on-screen.

  • From the drop-down menu arrow, choose Classic View
  • This should then show all your Zotero folders

Add or edit citations part 2

In the pop-up which shows your Zotero folders:

  • Locate and highlight the reference you need
  • Click OK 
  • This should add the reference as an in-text citation, at the point your cursor is in the document

Bibliography (reference list)

In Word, using the Zotero tab at the top of the screen.

Once you have completed your document, or earlier if you wish to check this function:

  • Place the cursor where you want the bibliography (reference list)
  • Use the Add / Edit bibliography function
  • This should generate the bibliography (reference list)

If you need to change the referencing style:

  • Use Document Preferences at the top of the screen
  • In the pop-up panel, scroll to the required style and click OK
  • NB: if the OK button does not show at the bottom of the screen, use the return key instead
