Part 2C: Medline search - Practical

Activity - search on Ovid Medline

First, make sure you have watched the videos or followed the text instructions in this guide.

Now do a search on Ovid Medline, using your topic from the search sheet in Activity 1.

Reminder:

  • Look for subject headings one at a time, then combine the separate lines with 'AND'
  • Use the Limits in centre-screen 
  • Check the results lower down the screen: to see the full text of an article, use the FindIt@Bham link
  • Tick boxes for the results you want to save: then Print, Email or Export

Subject headings or 'search by keyword':

  • In the advanced search screen, keep the "Map term to subject heading" box ticked
  • If you don't find a useful MeSH term, choose the 'search by keyword' option instead

Additional Limits:

  • Click on the grey bar for Additional Limits in the middle of the screen
  • Look for Age groups and choose one or more: or Publication Types and select Systematic Review or Randomized Controlled Trial
  • Then click 'Limit a search'  to place these limits on the last line of search
