EndNote Online is the recommended reference management software tool for all students on undergraduate (UG) or taught postgraduate (PGT) courses at the University of Birmingham. Use this guide to take you through the key elements of EndNote Online software (sometimes called EndNote Web). The tabs on the right of the screen can be used to navigate section-by-section or to go direct to a specific topic as required.
EndNote Online is reference management software and has similarities as such to Mendeley, Zotero and other tools.
Use is enabled by setting up an account on the database platform Web of Science, on which EndNote Online is hosted.
References from database searches and other sources can be stored on EndNote Online. Most databases - except Web of Science - require the download of a file of chosen records (most commonly in RIS format), then upload into Endnote Online.
Downloading the Cite while you Write tool from within EndNote Online enables you to insert citations and create reference lists directly in Word.

For PhD level and beyond, and for other academic researchers or members of University staff, we recommend using EndNote Desktop. This is a separate, downloadable product, and not the same as EndNote Online which is web-based. Support for researchers is provided by the Research Skills Team.
